Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
SALISBURY, Md. - Left fielder Jhonny Santos matched his season-high with three RBI, driving in all the Grasshoppers runs in a 6-3 loss to the Shorebirds on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Greensboro (28-29) had won three straight games before this loss, the team's fourth 3-game winning streak of the season.
Cameron Bishop (5-3) earned the win for Delmarva, working 6.0 innings and limiting the Grasshoppers to three runs on five hits while striking out five and walking three. Trevor Rogers (0-2) worked 3 and 1/3 innings for Greensboro in a losing effort, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out a career-high six batters and walking two. Nestor Bautista followed with 3 and 2/3 frames on the mound, giving up one run on three hits.
Nick Vespi worked the final 3.0 innings on the mound for Delmarva, keeping Greensboro off the board to earn the save (2).
Santos finished 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI on a night when the Grasshoppers mustered only six hits.
In the first inning, Thomas Jones led off the game with a walk and eventually scored on a Jhonny Santos sacrifice-fly for an early 1-0 lead.
The Shorebirds jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a 3-run frame. Brandon Becker singled to open the frame and went first-to-third on Jean Carrillo's ensuing base hit. Two batters later, Jaylen Ferguson belted a home run (2) to left-center field, scoring Becker and Carrillo for a 3-1 lead.
Greensboro didn't take long to tie the game, plating two runs in the top of the third. Micah Brown and Michael Hernandez led off the inning with walks, and Jose Devers loaded the bases with a 1-out base hit. Santos followed with a 2-run double, scoring Brown and Hernandez to tie the game, 3-3.
Delmarva nudged ahead one inning later when Will Robertson tripled off Rogers with one out in the bottom of the fourth and later scored when reliever Nestor Bautista uncorked a wild pitch. In the fifth, Zach Jarrett doubled, and Seamus Curran drove him in with an RBI-single for a 5-3 advantage.
In the ninth, Trevor Craport doubled off Michael Mertz and scored on Carrillo's RBI-single.
The Grasshoppers are back home on Friday to open a 3-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws at First National Bank Field at 7:00 p.m. Gates open at 6:00 p.m., and tickets are available online at gsohoppers.com.
