
'Birds Flex Bats to Stave off Sweep

SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds ignited the offense the finale against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, avoiding the sweep with a 6-3 win on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue.
Cameron Bishop (5-3) picked up the win with his seventh Quality Start for the Shorebirds (31-26), allowing three runs on five hits in six innings while walking three and striking out five. The Quality Start was Delmarva's first since Matthias Dietz went seven scoreless innings to beat Lakewood on May 25.
Trevor Rogers (0-2) suffered the loss for Grasshoppers (28-29), giving up four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings. Nick Vespi pitched three scoreless innings and picked up his second save of the year.
Greensboro continued its series trend of early success in the top of the first. Thomas Jones led off the game with a walk and advanced two bases after a Jose Devers groundout to first. Jhonny Santos stepped in next and delivered a sac fly to center, plating Jones for an early 1-0 lead.
Delmarva at last had an answer in the second inning. Branden Becker and Jean Carrillo led off with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Jaylen Ferguson launched a deep home run to left center field. The three-run shot, Ferguson's second of the year, put the Shorebirds up 3-1.
The Grasshoppers had a quick response. Micah Brown and Michael Hernandez both walked to start off the third. After a Devers single loaded the bases, Santos delivered a two-run double to draw the game even at 3-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Will Robertson slashed a ball to the gap in right center turned on the jets, and cruised into third for a one-out triple. Shortly after, Robertson sprinted home on a wild pitch to give the Shorebirds the 4-3 lead.
Zach Jarrett led off the fifth with a double, and Seamus Curran smacked a base hit into right to bring him home and make it 5-3 Delmarva. One more insurance run came in in the eighth. Trevor Craport ripped one to the left field corner for a leadoff double and advanced to third on a groundout. Jean Carrillo then lifted one over the drawn-in infield for an RBI single to give the game its final margin.
Ferguson finished the day 1-for-3 with the three-run homer in the second for the Shorebirds. Carrillo went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Santos went 1-for-3 with a double and drove in all three Grasshopper runs.
The Shorebirds now open a four-game series against the Hagerstown Suns with a Friday night doubleheader. Matthias Dietz (5-1, 2.91) matches up against Kyle Johnston (0-2, 3.56) in Game 1, while Scott Burke (1-2, 5.81) is penciled in for the nightcap against Jackson Stoeckinger (2-4, 7.04). First pitch of the opener is set for 5:05 p.m. with gates opening at 4:00. Friday night is Perdue Farmers Night, featuring a Q105 Fireworks show also presented by Perdue Foods. It's also Orange Friday and Froggy 99.9 Big Beer Friday. Pregame coverage of the first game on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 4:50 with Will DeBoer and Drew Williams on the call.
