Santiesteban's Homer in Ninth Propells Newark Past Worcester, 5-4

August 17, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Danny Santiesteban's solo homer in the ninth propelled the Newark Bears past the Tornadoes 5-4 on Wednesday night at the HIP. Worcester came back from two different deficits (1-0 and 4-1), but never led in the 14th match-up this season between the squads.

For the second time in as many days, Kyle Morrison earned the win and Mikey Mehlich notched the save. Together they totaled two innings, two strikeouts, two walks and one hit allowed.

The Bears scored in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead on one of two sacrifice flies in the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Abraham Nunez knocked Cam Monger home with a ground out to tie it up. In the very next half inning, however, Newark retook the lead.

Paddy Matera added a sacrifice fly, then Burt Reynolds hit his third homer in the last two days (and his sixth this year versus Worcester) to put Newark up 3-1.

In the seventh, the Tornadoes struck for three runs against Anthony Pluta. Alex Nunez had a two-run triple, scoring Ryan Crespi and Monger. Alex later came home on Abraham Nunez's single to tie the game at 4-4. Alex Nunez, Chris Colabello and Alex Trezza all had multiple hits in the game, and Crespi scored twice in the defeat.

The final game of the season series is on Thursday night at 7:05pm. It's Country Western Night at the HIP. The gates open at 6:00, and Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM begins at 6:50.
