Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass. - August 17, 2011) - After dropping both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader, the Brockton Rox (19-11, 45-31) rebounded with an 11-2 victory on Wednesday night at Campanelli Stadium, handing the Quebec Capitales (17-12, 52-23) their worst loss of the season.

Julian Sampson (8-4) was dominant early in the ballgame, striking out four of the first five batters he faced. The 22 year-old went on to earn his eighth win of the season, which is tied for the team lead. In seven innings of work, Sampson allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks, while striking out seven.

Sampson received plenty of run support from his teammates, as the story of the game was the Brockton offense. The Rox jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after Keith Brachold ripped a two-run double to score Chris Valencia and Mike Torres. Brachold was then driven home on an RBI groundout from Chris Grossman to make it 3-0.

After a leadoff double in the third, Quebec tallied their first run of the contest when Goefrey Tomlinson scored on a Trey Hernandez throwing error, making 3-1 Rox.

Brockton immediately responded in the bottom half of the frame, as Brachold and Torres launched back-to-back home runs off Dan Sausville (5-5) to take a 5-1 lead.

Brockton tacked on another run in the third after Hernandez plated Grossman with a line-drive base-hit.

The Rox scored once again in the fourth when Dan Barbero tagged up on a deep fly ball from Valencia, giving Brockton a 7-1 lead.

After a Josh Colafemina triple in the fifth, Quebec rallied to score a run as Sebastien Boucher's third straight single plated Colafemina. Boucher was one of only three Capitales with a hit in the ballgame, and finished the evening 3-for-4.

Brockton answered back in the bottom half of the inning with another run, this time coming off the bat of Barbero. The leftfielder singled to score Shawn Williams, who opened the frame with a leadoff double.

That run marked the end of the night for Sausville, who struggled in four and 2/3 innings of work. The righthander conceded eight runs on ten hits and two walks, while striking out three.

The scoring barrage continued for Brockton in the sixth when a sacrifice fly from Williams knocked in Dominic Ramos. The Rox added two more in the eighth, courtesy of an RBI triple from Brachold that scored Tucker Nathansand an RBI double from Williams that plated Brachold and made it 11-2.

Nine of the ten Brockton batters in the game recorded hits, while Brachold, Ramos, Williams Valencia, and Torres all had multi-hit games for the Rox.

Brachold finished just a single shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. With 68 RBIs in 2011, Brachold is now just four away from tying the Rox all-time single-season record.

The Rox will look to even the series on Thursday, as RHP John Kelly (1-0, 1.50) will battle RHP John Mariotti (9-1, 3.22) in the finale at Campanelli Stadium.
