
Santana sets record in 6-4 loss

St. Joseph, MO - Canaries second baseman set a club record and established an American Association record with five stolen bases as the Sioux Falls Canaries (3-5) fell short in a 6-4 loss against the St. Joe Blacksnakes (2-6).
The Canaries drew first blood in the top of the first inning. Ralph Santana singled and stole his first base of the night. Blacksnakes Catcher Jefferson Infante threw the ball into centerfield and Santana got to third base. Edgard Clemente would drive Santana in with an RBI single for the 1-0.
St. Joe tied the game in the bottom of the first. Jimmy Mojica singled and scored on a double by Mark Burke, making it 1-1.
The Canaries took the lead in the second inning. Johnny Kaplan drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base. Kaplan came around to score when Santana reached on a throwing error by Blacksnakes third baseman Ben Thomas, giving the Canaries a 2-1 edge. Santana would then steal his second base of the night.
In the top of the fourth inning, Santana struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitch allowing him to record his third stolen base of the night.
The bottom half of the inning saw the Blacksnakes take the lead. Wil Quintana hit a lead off triple and scored on a single by Cody Nowlin to tie the game, 2-2. Terrell Merriman reached on a fielders choice and Ben Thomas walked setting up Jefferson Infante who singled them both home for a 4-2 lead.
Santana got his fourth stolen base of the night in the sixth inning. He walked and stole second base, again advancing to third on a wild throw by Infante.
The Canaries tied the game in the top of the seventh. Clemente led off with a walk and Abner Arroyo scored him on a triple, cutting the Blacksnakes lead to 4-3. Alexis Hernandez followed with a single, knotting the game, 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mark Burke led off with a walk. Cody Nowlin singled, and Merriman received an intentional base on balls to load the bases for the Blacksnakes. With two outs, Thomas singled in two runs for the 6-4 lead.
The Canaries threatened in the eighth inning. Kyle Kmiecik drew a leadoff walk. Santana then singled Kmiecik to third. With runners on the corners, Santana stole his fifth base of the night to set the stage with two in scoring position. J.C. Huget buckled down in relief for the Blacksnakes and retired the side without a run, leading to the 6-4 final.
Sean Donlin (0-1) suffered the loss pitching 4.1 innings in relief of Tony Cogan who left the game injured in the second inning. Jessen Merle (1-1) got the win for St. Joe, and Huget picked up his first save of the year.
The teams will meet again on Saturday night in St. Joe. The Canaries return to Sioux Falls on Tuesday to host the St. Paul Saints for a three-game series at the Birdcage.
