SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 131-121 in front of a sellout crowd on Friday at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Forward Joe Alexander paced the Warriors, recording a double-double with a game-high 28 points and 14 rebounds. James Michael McAdoo also notched a double-double, scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds. Elliot Williams knocked down 22 points and 6 assists, while Mychel Thompson added 21 points and 6 rebounds in his first start of the season.
The Vipers were led by forward Tony Bishop who tallied 24 points and 7 rebounds. Chane Behanan recorded the only double-double for Rio Grande Valley, with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Despite five players scoring in double-figures, the effort was not enough to back a win for the Vipers The Warriors raced ahead with an Elliot Williams push early in the first quarter after he iced three buckets in less than three minutes of play. The second quarter would see the Vipers push back offensively, going on a 22-14 run for the second quarter to edge the Warriors by 1 heading into halftime.
Both teams adjusted and returned for a tightly-contested third quarter that saw Mychel Thompson emerge to grab 8 of his 21 points. Two made free throws by Akil Mitchell put the Vipers up by 2 points entering the fourth quarter, as the team clung to an 87-85 lead.
The Warriors found the spark they needed when Taylor Griffin scored on back-to-back possessions to help stave off another push from the Vipers. Alexander would record 8 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, knocking down a turn-around jumper and slamming it home four times.
The Santa Cruz Warriors will once again face the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the final game of a two-game home stand at 6:00 p.m. Pacific. Fans can listen to the broadcast on the Santa Cruz Warriors flagship station, KION 1460AM/101.1FM, or catch the game on the NBA D-League's YouTube channel, via www.santacruzbasketball.com.
