Sand Gnats Knock off RiverDogs, 6-2

CHARLESTON, SC - Savannah scored four times in the fifth inning in racing to a 6-2 win over the Charleston RiverDogs in front of 2.984 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Sunday evening.

With the victory, Savannah rebounds to split the four-game series and moves to 26-18, while Charleston sees its winning streak end at two games and drops to 19-25.

The Sand Gnats staked themselves to a 2-0 in the second against Jose Ramirez on a RBI single by Kai Gronauer and a sacrifice fly from Nick Santomauro.

Charleston cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom half on a two-out RBI single by Ray Kruml against Brandon Moore.

After Ramirez retired the side in order in the top of the third, play was halted by a one-hour, 27-minute rain delay.

In the top of the fifth, the Sand Gnats plated four runs versus RiverDogs reliever Ryan Acosta for a 6-1 lead. Pedro Zapata's two-run triple highlighted the frame.

Luke Murton's RBI groundout in the eighth brought the score to 6-2, but Charleston would get no closer.

John Church (3-0) got the win in relief tossing 4.0 innings of one-hit baseball with three strikeouts. Ramirez (2-3) absorbed his second loss in a row allowing two runs in his 3.0 innings.

Rob Lyerly registered two hits for the RiverDogs to pace the team's five-hit attack.

The RiverDogs head to South Carolina's Upstate to take on the Greenville Drive for a four-game series from May 24-27. The first contest of the series is set for Monday with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Charleston sends right-hander Kelvin Perez (2-2, 2.58) to the mound to face Greenville's left-hander Drake Britton (0-1, 2.00).

FUN AT THE BALLPARK: It was another Family Sunday sponsored by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC). Fans enjoyed a number of activities, from face painting and inflatables on the concourse, to Reading with the RiverDogs and catch in the outfield prior to the game. The RiverDogs doubled the fun Sunday for all fans of books and reading with "Reading with the RiverDogs" on the concourse prior to the game as well as the Junior League of Charleston supports the Boys and Girls Club Reading Soul Mates' book giveaway. Junior League of Charleston supports the Boys and Girls Club Reading Soul Mates gave away books to the first 1,000 kids through the gates. After the game, fans enjoyed a special postgame family-friendly Christian concert from Eleventyseven. Family Sundays are presented by CCPRC and Apex Broadcasting.
