Hagerstown Suns News Release
With a six-run fifth inning, the Hagerstown Suns (25-19) surged past the Delmarva Shorebirds (19-25) 6-3 on Sunday afternoon to end the five-game set with four victories.
The Shorebirds struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning with runners on the corners and one out. Off Suns starter Mitchell Clegg (5-0), Ty Kelly grounded out to second. Kieron Pope scored from third on the play to give Delmarva a 1-0 lead.
The Suns exploded in the next half inning combining hits and Delmarva errors to put six runs on the board. On a Francisco Soriano sacrifice bunt attempt, pitcher Matt Hobgood (2-4) threw the ball away, allowing Eury Perez to score from second to tie the game and sending Soriano to third. Soriano got home after a wild pitch for a Suns 2-1 lead.
Two batters later, Steven Souza hit a solo home run, his seventh of the season. Following a Justin Bloxom walk, Destin Hood doubled down the left field line to score Bloxom and take a 4-1 lead. On a passed ball, Hood took third and came home as catcher Jason Stifler's throw to third went into the outfield. Brett Newsome followed with a walk, stealing second, advanced to third on a J.R. Higley strike out and scored as Adrian Nieto reached on a Garabez Rosa fielding error to complete the six-run inning for a 6-1 Hagerstown lead.
Delmarva tried to comeback after the seventh-inning stretch off reliever Glenn Gibson. With second and third with two away, Gary Helmick grounded out to third to score Baxter. In the next at-bat, Jason Stifler got home on a Gibson balk to make the score 6-3.
Wanel Vasquez came in the eighth inning for Hagerstown and finished the game without allowing a run, ending the game for a Hagerstown 6-3 win.
Clegg earns his second straight win with six innings thrown, allowing one run and striking out three. Vasquez earned his third save of the season with two innings pitched with two strikeouts.
Hobgood gets the loss after throwing 4.2 innings, giving up six runs, three unearned.
The Suns will hit the road to Lakewood to take on the BlueClaws for a four-game series. The first game will be on Monday at 6:35 p.m.
