Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (26-18) earned a split of their four-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs with a 6-2 win Sunday evening in Charleston. The game was delayed by an hour and twenty-seven minute rain delay in the middle of the third inning.
Following the delay, with a 2-1 lead, the Gnats broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning in which Savannah needed just one hit. C Kai Gronauer walked to start the inning and DH Nick Santomauro reached on an error to put runners at first and second. 1B Alex Gregory bunted Gronauer and Santomauro to second and third. With 2B Alonzo Harris batting, Gronauer scored on a wild pitch that moved Santomauro to third. CF Pedro Zapata followed with a triple into right field that chased home Santomauro and Harris. Zapata scored on an RBI groundout by SS Wilmer Flores that put the Gnats ahead 6-1.
The Gnats grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Singles from LF Juan Lagares and RF Rafael Fernandez put runners at the corners. Gronauer singled home Lagares with the game's first run and Fernandez scored on a Santomauro sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0, Gnats.
Charleston (19-25) loaded up the bases against Savannah starter Brandon Moore in the bottom of the second inning, but Moore held the Dogs' damage to just one run. After the Gnats batted in the top of the third, the rains halted play and forced both starters from the game. After Moore left the game, reliever John Church provided a season-high four shutout innings. He gave up just one hit and struck out three to earn his third win and drop his ERA to 1.03.
Tomorrow Night The Gnats return home to take on the Kannapolis Intimidators in a four-game homestand that begins with Dollar Monday at Historic Grayson Stadium. LHP Jimmy Fuller (5-2, 1.95) will take the ball for Savannah against RHP Cameron Bayne (2-6, 4.78) for Kannapolis with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
