Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Tuesday was Education Day at Banner Island Ballpark, and unfortunately for the Stockton Ports, it was the San Jose Giants doing the schooling. San Jose scored 13 runs over the first three innings on its way to a 13-7 win over Stockton in front of a capacity crowd of 5,112.
San Jose got off to a fast start in the first inning as Chris Shaw hit a two-run homer with two outs, his second home run in as many at-bats going back to Monday night's contest to give the Giants a 2-0 lead. Stockton countered with a run in the bottom of the first as, with the bases loaded and one out, Joe Bennie reached on a fielder's choice force out to bring in a run and cut the San Jose lead to 2-1.
The Giants, though, began to surge in the second. Ports starter Zack Erwin (0-2) issued a leadoff walk to Steven Duggar and then back-to-back singles to Jonah Arenado and Ty Ross that loaded the bases. Christian Paulino followed with a two-run double down the left field line. After a wild pitch allowed another run to score to make it 5-1, Erwin recorded back-to-back outs, The Giants, though, added a two-out run on an RBI single by C.J Hinojosa to bring the San Jose lead to 6-1. Erwin was then lifted for Brendan Butler, who gave up an RBI single to Jose Vizcaino, Jr. and an RBI double to Duggar to make it an 8-1 ballgame.
Erwin suffered the loss in the toughest outing of his career, going an inning-and-two-thirds and allowing eight earned runs on six hits while striking out three.
Butler ran into early trouble in the third as he issued a leadoff walk to Ty Ross and then an infield single to Paulino. The Stockton defense then crumbled as Johneshwy Fargas reached on an error by first baseman Sandber Pimentel on a dropped throw following a routine ground ball. Brandon Bednar came up next and reached on a fielding error by shortstop Melvin Mercedes that allowed a run to score. Hinejosa came up next with the bases loaded and drew a walk and Shaw followed with a two-run single that made it a 12-1 game. At that point, Butler was lifted for Joey Wagman, who induced a double-play on which another run scored to make it 13-1.
Butler went a third of an inning and allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits while walking two. Wagman would be a bright spot for Stockton as he went three-and-a-third scoreless innings and allowed three hits while striking out four to settle down the San Jose offense.
Giants starter Jason Forjet (3-1) was able to coast through most of the afternoon while working with the huge lead. Forjet, though, did run into some trouble in the sixth as he gave up a leadoff single to Mercedes and, two batters later, hit Tyler Marincov. After Joe Bennie singled to load the bases, Pimentel delivered a two-run double to left to make it a 13-3 score. After Forjet walked Seth Brown, he was lifted for Jose Reyes. After Reyes induced a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of Argenis Raga that brought a run home, Jose Brizuela delivered a three-run homer to right, his first of the season, to cut the Ports deficit to 13-7. After back-to-back singles by Harris and Mercedes following the homer, Reyes was lifted for Jose Morel who got B.J Boyd to fly out to end the threat.
Forjet would go on to pick up the win, going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out three. Reyes gave up one run on three hits over one third of an inning. Morel, after extinguishing the fire in the sixth, went on to retire all seven batters that he faced in the contest.
Pat Young pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the ballgame for San Jose. For Stockton, Rob Huber pitched an inning-and-two-thirds scoreless following Wagman, while Koby Gauna pitched two scoreless frames beginning in the eighth.
The Ports and Giants play the third game of their four-game set on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Daniel Gossett (1-0, 3.32 ERA) will come off the disabled list and make the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose southpaw Andrew Suarez (1-1, 2.78 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
