Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Monday baseball is weird. A bid for a perfect game, then holding out for the no-hit bid, 11 total walks, 15 stranded runners, and at last, a win for the Quakes, as Rancho defeated Bakersfield by a score of 4-3 on Monday night at LoanMart Field.
Josh Sborz (2-1) was perfect through four until a lead-off walk killed that prospect in the fifth. He didn't give up a hit until a lead-off double in the sixth, and was pulled from the game following the seventh.
Sborz was lights out in the first four frames of the game, striking out two and not allowing a base-runner. A lead-off walk and a hit batter broke up the perfect game in the fifth, but he struck out two to escape the inning.
Rancho scored early, due to Blaze starter Eddie Campbell (2-1) having a hard time locating the strike zone. The Quakes drew four walks to plate one in the first. Matt Beaty tacked on one more in the third, plating Yusniel Diaz with an RBI double.
The Quakes pushed Campbell off the mound in the fourth, after he gave up back-to-back doubles to Tim Locastro and Kyle Garlick. Garlick then scored on yet another RBI single by Matt Beaty, making it 4-0.
Bakersfield didn't score until the sixth, when a lead-off double by Gianfranco Wawoe broke up Sborz no-no bid. A base hit by Drew Jackson plated Wawoe to put the Blaze on the board, 4-1.
Kyle Petty took Sborz deep in the seventh, but Sborz locked in and retired three straight to end the inning. The Blaze managed to tack on one more in the eighth off Rancho's Joe Broussard after a grounder scored Drew Jackson from third, making it a 4-3 game.
Scott Griggs worked around three different base-runners in the ninth inning, ultimately getting Austin Cousino to ground into the game-ending double-play and securing his fourth save of the year.
Erick Mejia extended his hit streak to nine games with two hits tonight.
Rancho (17-8) takes game one of this four game series with the win, and Andrew Sopko (2-0) will face off against Blaze right-hander Andrew Moore (1-1) on Tuesday in game two. First pitch is at 7:05. Come join us at LoanMart Field for Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday, where ten bottles or cans will get you in on the action for free. Tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
