San Jose Giants News Release
STOCKTON, CA - Mark Reyes fired seven dominant innings with just one run allowed in a 5-2 Giants victory over the Stockton Ports on Monday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. The series-opening win for San Jose (11-11) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Reyes (2-0) surrendered three hits with one walk and five strikeouts during his 87-pitch masterpiece to pick-up the win. The left-hander retired 12 straight Ports batters to begin his start and six in a row to end his night. Rodolfo Martinez earned his sixth save with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
Chris Shaw (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) doubled and homered to lead the Giants offensive attack. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (2-for-4, RBI) added a pair of hits while Brandon Bednar (1-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI) delivered a key two-RBI triple.
San Jose jumped out early with three runs in the top of the second against Ports starter Casey Meisner to take a 3-0 lead. Shaw led off with a towering fly ball to deep right that glanced off the glove of Stockton right fielder Seth Brown, who attempted to make the catch with his back up against the wall. The play was scored an error as Shaw raced into third. Following a strikeout of Aramis Garcia and a walk to Steven Duggar, Vizcaino stepped to the plate and lined a single into center plating Shaw with the first run of the contest. Meisner recovered to set down Jonah Arenado on a pop out, but then Bednar laced a line drive over the head of center fielder James Harris for a triple. The hit scored both Duggar and Vizcaino to push the lead to 3-0.
Meanwhile, Reyes didn't allow a baserunner until the bottom of the fifth. The Giants starter set down the Ports 1-2-3 in the first, second, third and fourth frames throwing a total of just 39 pitches. A walk to Tyler Marincov started the bottom of the fifth, but Mikey White followed by grounding into a double play. John Nogowski then lined a single into center for Stockton's first hit of the game. Brown was up next and he also singled to put runners on the corners, but Reyes settled down to strikeout Lolana Akau to end the inning.
The Ports finally broke through against Reyes in the bottom of the sixth as Sandber Pimentel led off with a line drive home run to right. The round-tripper, Pimentel's first of the season, trimmed the San Jose lead to 3-1. Reyes though didn't allow another hitter to reach base for the remainder of his outing. He quickly set down the next three hitters after Pimentel's blast to end the sixth before working a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
The Giants then extended their lead with a two-run top of the eighth. Facing reliever Kyle Finnegan, C.J Hinojosa drew a two-out walk. Shaw was up next and he crushed a fly ball over the fence in right for a two-run homer. The home run was Shaw's fourth of the year and it increased the San Jose lead to 5-1.
Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the bottom of the eighth for the Giants and surrendered a two-out solo home run to Pimentel - his second homer of the game - to cut the Giants advantage to 5-2. Stockton though would get no closer as Martinez (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth to slam the door for the save.
Meisner (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all unearned) on four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out seven.
