Lancaster JetHawks News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Elieser Hernandez tossed five innings and allowed just one hit, but the Inland Empire 66ers pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 2-1 victory over the JetHawks in the series opener on Monday night at San Manuel Stadium.
Each team put up a single tally in the third inning. Bryan Muniz got the rally started for the JetHawks (8-14) with a single, the first hit of the game for either team. Kristian Trompiz followed with a double and Bobby Boyd brought home Muniz with an RBI sacrifice-fly.
The 66ers (6-19) responded in the bottom half of the inning, as a run came across on a throwing error by Lancaster second baseman Marc Wik.
The game remained knotted 1-1 until the ninth. Michael Strentz led off the bottom of the frame with a single off Evan Grills. Strentz advanced to second on a balk by Grills and moved to third on a ground out. After the JetHawks intentionally walked Caleb Adams, Jeff Boehm delivered an RBI single to end the game.
The victory was the first for Inland Empire against a South Division opponent this season and only their third win overall at home.
Hernandez allowed just an unearned run and struck out three. Grills (2-1) suffered the loss in relief, despite retiring nine in a row at one point. The left-hander struck out three in 3.1 innings. Jordan Piche (1-0) earned the win out of the Inland Empire bullpen with two shutout innings of work.
The JetHawks and 66ers continue their four-game series tomorrow night in San Bernardino. Dean Deetz (1-0) will start for Lancaster against Jake Jewell (0-3). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
