San Antonio Missions News Release
A 13-hit attack spurred San Antonio to an 11-2 rout of Frisco Wednesday night in front of 5, 074 at Wolff Stadium.
Desperate for an offensive breakout, the Missions started strong on Military Appreciation Night. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first on a Lewis Brinson solo homer off T.J. Weir, San Antonio answered with one of its own in the bottom half against southpaw Victor Payano as reigning Texas League Player of the Week Nick Torres tied the game with a run-producing groundout.
An inning later, the Missions took a 3-1 lead on Payano (4-4) courtesy of RBI singles from Nelson Ward and Jose Rondon. In the bottom of the fourth, San Antonio pushed the lead to three when Ward tripled and then came home on River Stevens' sacrifice fly to left.
Weir (1-1) was impressive in his first Wolff Stadium start since arriving at Double-A. The former Ball State University star allowed just two runs on five hits and no walks, while fanning six over six innings.
His offense made sure he picked up his first Double-A win in the seventh against relievers David Perez and Ryne Slack, sending 11 men to the plate in a seven-run explosion that capped scoring. San Antonio set season highs for most runs and hits (seven) in an inning.
Rondon finished with a club, season-high, tying four hits in the win. Nelson Ward collected San Antonio's other multi-hit effort, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Nick Torres (1-for-5, RBI, R) extended his hit streak to 10, tying Rondon for longest on the team in 2016.
Jose Torres (Double-A debut) and Rafael De Paula combined on three scoreless innings of relief to cap the Missions win. The 11 runs scored tied a season high.
San Antonio (18-39) continues its four-game series with Frisco (33-23) Thursday on Cricket Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio and Cox Media Group. Right-hander Bryan Rodriguez (3-5, 3.51) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with Texas rehabber A.J. Griffin.
Notes: Former Mission and current Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo went 1-for-3 with a strikeout for the RoughRiders Wednesday. Also rehabbing with Frisco was catcher Robinson Chirinos, who went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
