Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Hooks cranked three more home runs in support of Francis Martes and every starter recorded at least one hit in a 7-0 rout of Midland in front of 4,723 fans at Whataburger Field Thursday night.

Corpus Christi (37-21) has now hit 71 home runs this season, second in minor league baseball behind Reading (PA), the AA affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies in the Eastern League.

The Hooks offense jumped out to an early lead during their first at-bats, thanks to a pair of extra base hits. With one out, Alex Bregman lined a triple to right-center field and scored one batter later on a RBI double down the right field line by Derek Fisher.

The extra base hit barrage continued one inning later. After missing a bunt on the first pitch faced, Alejandro Garcia skied his first career AA home run to the berm in left field, scoring Alfredo Gonzalez after the catcher blooped a double down the right field line.

Corpus Christi sent eight batters to the plate during the four-run fourth inning. Chase McDonald smacked a 405-foot dinger to the left field berm to open the frame and Conrad Gregor took the next pitch 384 feet to right-center field to complete the first back-to-back pair of home runs by the Hooks in 2016.

After two quick outs and a pair of singles from Chan-Jong Moon and Teoscar Hernandez, Bregman knocked Midland starter Joel Seddon (1-6) out of the game by driving in both runs on a cue shot double down the left field line, his second extra base hit of the night, to make the score 7-0.

In a rematch of the starting pitchers from the May 23 matchup in West Texas, Martes (3-2) cruised through the RockHounds lineup, scattering five hits over 6 2/3 innings (98 pitches) while striking out nine batters and walking a single Hound. Eric Peterson entered the game in the seventh inning and threw the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out two batters in relief.

With the win and Frisco's 4-0 loss at San Antonio, the Hooks extended their South Division lead to 3 ½ games. Corpus Christi has now won six of the first seven games in the month of June and has taken the first three games in the four-game set with Midland (27-31) after being swept in the first home series with the RockHounds in April.

The two squads will conclude their final series of the 2016 First Half Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Edison Frias (2-0) will make his first start since May 6 at Midland against Corey Walter (0-2). Friday is Team USA Night at Whataburger Field and the first 1,000 fans receiving foam torches courtesy of Radiology Associates.
