Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - A trio of long balls and some stifling relief pitching propelled the Corpus Christi Hooks to their seventh win in their last eight games, defeating the Midland RockHounds 6-3 in front of 4,097 at Whataburger Field Wednesday night.

Derek Fisher recorded his only hit of the night in the seventh inning, skying a Jake Sanchez (1-2) offering off the left-field foul pole for his 11th dinger of the season, driving in Teoscar Hernandez and Alex Bregman to give the Hooks their first lead of the game.

Down 3-0 after four innings, Corpus Christi (36-21) cracked the scoreboard with a pair of long balls. Chase McDonald smacked his ninth home run of the season-and first since May 4-on a first-pitch offering in the fifth inning to the left field berm, cutting the deficit to a pair of runs.

One inning later, reigning Texas League Player of the Month J.D. Davis took another first pitch into the Hooks bullpen for his 10th home run of the season, driving in Bregman to tie the game at three apiece. The homers knocked Midland starting pitcher Raul Alcantara from the ball game after 5 2/3 innings.

In his second start and third appearance of 2016, Kent Emanuel threw five innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out three Hounds batters and walking Brett Vertigan twice. David Paulino (3-2) earned the victory by facing the minimum number of RockHounds over his three relief innings, while Aaron West earned his sixth save of the year, surpassing his 2015 season total.

Midland (27-30) jumped out to a quick lead three batters into the game, when Tyler Marincov drove a RBI double to the left-centerfield wall. Vertigan, who drew a walk to lead off the game, came around to score the opening run for the RockHounds.

The Midland right fielder struck again in the third inning. After Vertigan drew his second walk in as many at-bats and J.P. Sportman doubled to left field, Marincov drove in both runs on a first-pitch single to put the visitors up 3-0.

The Southern Division rivals continue their four-game series Thursday night for another 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Francis Martes (2-2) will toe the mound for the Hooks and will face the Hounds' Daniel Seddon (1-5). Stripes presents Thirsty Thursday and fans will receive raffle tickets for a chance to win a television as part of the Great TV Giveaway.
