San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio rode the right arm of Michael Kelly to a 4-0 win over Frisco in front of 4,446 Thursday night at Wolff Stadium.
Kelly had been impressive through his first five Double-A starts, pitching to a 2.86 ERA. On Thursday, the 23-year-old hurler took it to another level. In a career-high, tying seven shutout innings, Kelly allowed just three hits and one walk, while striking out a season-high seven. Kelly threw 59 of his 91 pitches for strikes.
The Boynton Beach, FL native has struck out 35 batters against just 11 walks over 35.1 innings since his promotion.
Kelly (2-1) got the only run he would need in the second courtesy of Diego Goris' RBI double to left off Texas Rangers rehabber A.J. Griffin (0-1). It was the only run allowed by Griffin in his two and a third innings.
Taylor Lindsey pushed the Missions' lead to two in the fourth when he took Juan Grullon's 0-2 pitch over the wall in right. It was Lindsey's fifth round-tripper of the season, which is tied for the second-most on the club.
San Antonio capped scoring in the seventh when it plated two on a throwing error by catcher Kellin Deglan.
Relievers Seth Simmons and Jason Jester each worked scoreless frames to put a bow on San Antonio's fourth shutout of the season and its second in the last six games.
Reigning Texas League Player of the Week Nick Torres finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to extend his hit streak to a club, season-high 11 games. San Antonio racked up 10 hits in the win after compiling 13 Wednesday night.
San Antonio (19-39) concludes its four-game series with Frisco (33-24) Friday at 7:05 PM. Dinelson Lamet will take the hill for the Missions in what will be his highly-anticipated Double-A Debut. Frisco counters with southpaw Yohander Mendez (2-0, 3.60). The first 2,000 fans to enter Wolff Stadium will receive a free Replica Adam Jones Missions Road Jersey courtesy of McCombs Ford West.
Notes: Before the game, it was announced that catcher Miguel Del Castillo was transferred from Lake Elsinore to San Antonio. Del Castillo, who was on the DL with a hand fracture, went 0-for-2 with a walk Thursday night for the Missions. Catcher Ryan Miller was placed on the DL with a thumb injury. Former Mission and current Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo went 2-for-3 with a walk in his second rehab game with the 'Riders this series.
