San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions concluded their six-game series with the Frisco RoughRiders on Sunday afternoon. The Frisco offense came out of the gates strong and plated five runs in the first two innings and seven across the first four innings. Facing a multitude of pitchers, the San Antonio offense mustered up one run on two hits giving Frisco the series clinching win.
Efrain Contreras was the starting pitcher for the Missions. After receiving the loss on Wednesday, the Frisco hitters continued to torment him. Evan Carter, the Rangers #1 prospect, hit a solo homerun to begin the game. Contreras retired the next two batters before allowing a double to Dustin Harris. Harris came around to score on a throwing error from Evan Mendoza. On the play, Dio Arias beat out an infield single to shortstop and Mendoza, attempting to make the play, suffered the error. Frisco gained a 2-0 lead.
Ryan Garcia was the starting pitcher for the RoughRiders. San Antonio was able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first inning. With one out in the frame, Korry Howell hit a double and stole third base. Tirso Ornelas drove in Howell with a sacrifice fly and cut the lead to 2-1.
Contreras struggled with his command and only faced two batters in the top of the second inning. The right-hander walked the first two batters before being replaced by Henry Henry. Scott Kapers loaded the bases after laying down a sacrifice bunt. On the play, a throwing error from Luis Aviles Jr. allowed Kapers to reach base safely and load the bases. Henry issued a walk to plate the first run of the inning. Luisangel Acuna and Thomas Saggese both hit a sacrifice fly and Frisco improved their lead to 5-1.
The Missions had a runner in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Brantley Bell drew a walk and stole second base. Garcia retired the next two batters to leave Bell stranded.
The RoughRiders continued to increase their lead in the top of the third inning. Arias started off the frame with a double. Henry struck out the next batter before allowing an RBI single Chris Seise. Frisco improved their lead to 6-1.
Garcia was replaced by Nick Starr to begin the third inning. The final line for Garcia included one hit, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts.
For the fourth consecutive inning, Frisco added to their lead. With Kevin Kopps in the game, he allowed a one-out single to Harris who then stole second base. After recording the second out of the frame, an infield single from Kellen Strahm allowed Harris to score. On the play, a throwing error from Mendoza allowed Harris to score and advance to Strahm to second base. The Missions trailed 7-1.
The Missions found themselves with another scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth inning. Facing Alex Speas, Bell started off the frame with a double. The hard-throwing right-hander left Bell stranded after striking out the next three batters.
The RoughRiders broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning. Facing Jose Espada, Scott Kapers reached base on a throwing error. Espada issued a one-out and a single to load the bases. Dustin Harris unloaded on a fly ball to right field for a grand slam. His first homer of the season made it an 11-1 game.
San Antonio plated their second run of the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Facing Antoine Kelly, Connor Hollis drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second after Chandler Seagle grounded out. Hollis moved to third base after Bell grounded out.
