August 24, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Brockton Rox News Release
(Ramapo, N.Y.) - Julian Sampson
(9-4) cemented his team leading ninth victory of the season with seven strong innings Tuesday night, as the Brockton Rox (21-14, 47-34) toppled the Rockland Boulders (14-19, 33-46) 6-1 to open a week long roadtrip.
It was the righthander's fourth win during the month of August and Sampson now possesses an ERA under two (1.95) in his last five starts.
He allowed one run on six hits, while walking and striking out four.
On the opposite side of the rubber, Will Hassett (6-6) found trouble early and often is his second consecutive outing against the Rox.
After lasting just two and 2/3 innings in a recent start at Campanelli Stadium, Hassett surrendered five runs on five hits and five walks in four frames, before handing the ball over to the
Rockland
bullpen.
The Rox loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first and assumed an immediate 2-0 lead on a Mike Torres ground out and a sacrifice fly from Shawn Williams.
Back-to-back singles from Dominic Ramos and Keith Brachold to open the third yielded two more runs, before Ramos added a sacrifice fly in fourth to make the score 5-0. In the first four innings
Brockton
's leadoff hitter reached and scored three times.
Justin Fry
entered in the fifth and gave the Boulders three frames of quality relief, but the Rox mustered one more tally on Melvin Falu's RBI single against Jon Shepard in the eighth.
The lone run for the Boulders came on a Ryde Rodriguez RBI double that scored Cristobal Santana in the fifth.
Jimmer Kennedy
and Brad Hertzler each chipped in a scoreless frame to close out the ballgame.
Hertzler has now thrown seven shutout frames since returning from a left rotator cuff strain.
With the win and a
Worcester
loss, the Rox currently sit just one game behind the Tornadoes in the second half standings.
Game two of the three game series figures to be a well pitched affair as veteran John Kelly (1-0, 1.56) squares off against Rockland ace Bobby Blevins (6-7, 3.76).
First pitch is set for
7:05 p.m.
at Provident Bank Stadium.
