Pittsfield Colonials News Release

PITTSFIELD, MA - The Pittsfield Colonials saw a three-run lead cut to a single run in the eighth inning before pulling away for a 10-5 win over the Worcester Tornadoes.

The win, coupled with a win by New Jersey moved Worcester out of the second half lead in the Can-Am League and pushed Pittsfield into a playoff spot with 10 games remaining.

Leading by a single run, Pittsfield would put the game away in the eighth. With one out, Chris Torres singled, followed by back-to-back doubles by Matt Nandin and Quendin Davis to put Pittsfield up 7-4. A Jerod Edmondson single and a walk to Billy Mottram loaded the bases for Angel Molina who doubled to left-center, scoring all three runners and pushing the Colonials lead to 10-4. The three RBI gave Molina 72 on the year, vaulting him into the Can-Am League lead.

Pittsfield got the offense going right off the bat as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a groundout by Billy Mottram and a single by Johnny Welch, scoring Jerod Edmondson and Danny Bomback respectively.

Worcester would knot the game in the third as Cam Monger scored when Alex Nunez reached on an error. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Marl Minicozzi delivered a run with a fielder's choice to make it 2-2.

The Colonials would get the runs right back in the bottom of the inning with a two out rally. Johnny Welch doubled, followed by a 12-pitch plate appearance to Peter Fatse, which ended in a walk. Chris Torres stood in and cracked the first pitch he saw from Luis Pardo off the centerfield wall for a triple, scoring both runners and making it 4-2. Pittsfield would get another run in the fourth on an RBI double from Edmondson, scoring Quentin Davis, who had singled to lead off the inning to up the lead to 5-2.

The game would tighten in the seventh as a sac fly by Alex Nunez scored Ryan Crespi to cut the Colonials lead to 5-3. Pittsfield would avoid further damage as Chad Paronto struck out Minicozzi with the bases loaded to end the threat.

Worcester would not go away, however as the Tornadoes pulled to within a run in the eighth on a Nick Salotti homer, his 22nd of the season, to make it 5-4. Worcester would tack on a run in the ninth to create the final margin.

The win went to Chad Paronto (9-6) who tossed seven strong for Pittsfield. Luis Pardo (0-11) took the loss for Worcester. Offensively, Edmondson had four hits and is now 7-for-9 in the series with six RBI.

The series finale against the Tornadoes comes up on Thursday with T. J. Wink (4-1, 2.79) on the mound for the Colonials against Worcester ace Zach Zuercher (12-4, 3.62). Coverage on 89.7 WTBR FM will begin at 6:40 p.m. with the pregame show outside of a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
