New Jersey Jackals News Release

Newark, N.J. - Nick Giarraputo went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Kris Sanchez fell a homer short of the cycle as the New Jersey Jackals (22-13 second half, 49-33 overall) defeated the Newark Bears, 9-4, on Wednesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Jackals' victory combined with a Worcester Tornadoes' loss at Pittsfield vaults the Jackals back into first place in the second-half standings with 11 games remaining in the regular season. The Jackals have now won 10 of their last 13 contests, including five of their last six.

The Jackals took advantage of an early Bears' error to plate three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Mike DeJesus laid down a bunt, which Newark pitcher Brian Parker fielded and threw into the first base stands. D'Angelo Jimenez followed with a double off the right field warning track to open the scoring before a two-out, two-run single by Giarraputo gave the Jackals a 3-0 lead.

Giarraputo singled home his third run of the night in the top of the third following a Kris Sanchez triple into the right field corner to extend the New Jersey advantage to 4-0.

The Bears finally broke through against New Jersey starter Jon Kibler in the bottom of the fourth when catcher Billy Alvino lined a two-out, two-run double to left center to cut the Newark deficit to 4-2.

The Jackals struck right back though, putting the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning. After Parker retired the first two batters of the frame, the next seven New Jersey batters reached base with two outs. Leslie started the rally with a single and came around to score on a double by Sanchez to make it 5-2. An RBI triple by Giarraputo extended the Jackals' lead to 6-2 before an RBI single off the bat of Bryan Sabatella gave New Jersey a 7-2 edge. An error made it 8-2.

The Bears cut their deficit to 8-3 on a Brandon Watson RBI groundout in the seventh, but the Jackals responded quickly with a Sanchez RBI single in the eighth to make it a 9-3 contest. Newark capped the scoring with a pair of eighth-inning doubles by Tim Raines Jr. and Chase Fontaine.

Kibler (2-5) earned his second straight victory, holding Newark to two runs on five hits over six innings. Parker (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Bears, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits over five frames.

Bears' center fielder Tim Raines Jr. finished 3-for-4 in the losing effort.

The Jackals and Bears conclude their three-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw A.J. Wideman (5-2, 3.26 ERA) to the mound against Newark right-hander Casey Gaynor (5-2, 4.39 ERA) at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
