Sudbury Wolves News Release
Sam Tanguay stopped 46 Kitchener Ranger shots and made five consecutive saves in the shoot-out to lead the Sudbury Wolves to a 3-2 shoot-out victory over the Kitchener Rangers in Kitchener on Sunday night. It was the Wolves' first regular season victory in Kitchener since the 1994-95 season.
Tanguay, 19, has now won two of his last three starts and back-stopped the Wolves to their second road win of the season. Pavel Jenys scored early in the contest to give the Wolves a 1-0 first period lead. Nick Baptiste scored late in the second frame to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead headed into the final period.
The Rangers fired 20 shots on goal in the third period and managed to tie the contest. The Rangers had several great opportunities to win the game except for the acrobatic saves of Tanguay. The Wolves enjoyed a 5 on 3 man advantage for over a minute but were unable to score with the man advantage.
In overtime, the Wolves fired 8 shots on goal while the Rangers had 7 shots against Tanguay. Both goaltenders played strong games.
The Rangers scored on their first two attempts in the shoot-out and after Nick Baptiste was stopped, the Wolves' chances appeared bleak. But queue forwards Jacob Harris and Ivan Kashtanov who both scored high-light reel goals to tie the shoot-out. Tanguay then stopped the next five Ranger shooters before Brody Milne scored for the Wolves and gave the Wolves the shoot-out victory.
Shots on goal finished 48-37 in favour of the Rangers. The Wolves were 0 for 4 on the power play while the Rangers were 0 for 2 with the man advantage. Sam Tanguay was named the game's 1st star while Brody Milne was star number three for Sudbury.
The Wolves suffered more injuries in this one as veteran defenceman Jeff Corbett left the game with an upper body injury and didn't return. Wolves' forwards Michael Pezzetta and Brook Hiddink were also pulled from the game with concussion-like symptoms.
The Wolves played the game without the services of Brody Silk and David Zeppieri who remained in Sudbury to rehab their injuries. The Wolves are hopeful that both forwards will return in time for the Wolves' next road game in North Bay on Thursday.
