Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Lincoln Saltdogs dropped the first game of the season's second half on Tuesday, losing 8-2 to Sioux City. The Explorers broke open a tie game late by scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh at Lewis and Clark Park.

Lincoln starter Ryan Trytten (3-4) actually recorded a quality start, allowing three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work, but the seventh proved to be his undoing. New Explorer Jason Bryan led off the seventh with a solo home run, giving the X's a 3-2 lead. Trytten left after three more batters, but Vince Davis couldn't put out the fire, as four more runs came home to score, two of them on a double by Chris Grossman. An error in the frame meant two of the five runs were unearned.

Before that frame, the game was shaping up as a sloppy pitchers' duel between Trytten and Sioux City starter Tim Layden. Lincoln touched Layden for a run in the first on an RBI single by Dustin Yount, but Sioux City answered on an RBI hit by Juan Camacho. Both teams wasted scoring opportunities until the fifth, when Yount recorded his second RBI hit to give the Dogs the lead. The X's would tie it again in the bottom half without a hit, thanks to a hit batsman, a stolen base, an error and a wild pitch. After taking the lead in the seventh, Sioux City recorded another unearned run in the eighth to produce the final margin.

Yount ended the night 2-for-4 with both of Lincoln's RBI, while Jonny Kaplan finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a stolen base and a run scored. The Saltdogs struggled mightily in the field, committing four errors. For Sioux City, Layden departed after walking six in 5 1/3 innings, and Paige Dumont (3-1) earned the win in relief.

The Saltdogs and Explorers play game two of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05. Jason Jarvis is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln, while Dusty Bergman is expected to start for Sioux City.
