AirHogs win first game of second half

Grand Prairie, TX (07.01.08) - The Grand Prairie AirHogs started the second half of the American Association season on the right foot, defeating the El Paso Diablos 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Grand Prairie took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Noel Trevino clubbed an RBI single on a hit-and-run that brought in Brandon Carter from second. David Espinosa, who reached on a walk, scored on a wild-pitch from third base for the second run.

The Diablos answered with the long ball to tie it up in the top of the fourth. Walter Olmstead crushed a two run blast into the pool in right field to knot the score up at 2-2.

Edwin Maldonado put the AirHogs back in front in the bottom of the fifth, 3-2. He poked a line drive into shallow right field that brought in Brandon Carter from second base with two away.

The AirHogs took the 4-2 advantage in bottom of the sixth. J.B. Tucker reached on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He would steal third base and on that same play advance home, as the catcher Matt Kent threw it wildly past the third baseman.

Tucker finished the night 3-for-4 with a run. Brandon Carter was 2-for-2 with two runs.

Kieran Mattison (7-1) earned his fifth victory in six outings for Grand Prairie. He lasted six innings and surrendered two earned runs off of seven hits with six strikeouts and just one walk. The AirHogs bullpen was sharp, going three scoreless innings with no hits allowed. Matt Righter pitched two solid innings of relief with two strikeouts, while Geivy Garcia notched his second save pitching a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning.

Josh Nietz ( 5-5) was the losing pitcher for E Paso. He went six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, off of eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

The AirHogs will continue a three-game set with the El Paso Diablos on Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Grand Prairie's Jose Cordero (1-3, 4.15 ERA) will face Jusef Frias (3-3, 3.51 ERA) for El Paso.
