Saltdogs Dominate in Batting, Goldeyes Fall in Both Games of Double Header

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes fell to the Lincoln Saltdogs 8-2 in both games of an afternoon double header at Shaw Park.
In their first game, the teams were tied 2-2 headed into the top of the seventh. The Saltdogs took their permanent lead when Chad Hinshaw hit a three run triple, granting the Saltdogs a 5-2 lead. The Saltdogs would score three more times in the inning, including a sacrifice fly from Angel Reyes to bring Hinshaw home, and a two run homer from Brandon Jacobs that also brought Chad Simpson around the plate.
The Fish were the first to open scoring, after Goldeyes Grant Heyman doubled and easily cruised to second in the bottom of the fourth. Reynaldo Rodriguez followed up with an RBI triple that brought Heyman home. Kevin Garcia earned his sixth RBI of the season after he sacrifice flied a ball to bring Rodriguez home.
Lincoln answered back with two runs to tie the game in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Curt Smith launched the ball near second, allowing Ibarra to score. Goldeyes Jordan Ebert made a throwing error as he went for the double play, resulting in a run by Hinshaw.
Goldeyes starting pitcher Kevin McGovern took a no-decision in the first game, pitching well through five and a third innings. He allowed only five hits and zero runs. Saltdogs relief pitcher Jose Jose was credited with the win for the team, while Goldeyes Victor Capellan took the loss.
The Saltdogs came out swinging strong in the first inning of the second game, scoring five runs. With two outs and two men on base, Curt Smith hit a three run homer down the left line of the field. Following a single by Nathaniel Maggio, Chris Jacobs hit a two run homer for the Saltdogs, making it his second homerun of the day.
In the top of the fourth, Saltdogs Ivan Marin connected with a ball to hit his first homerun of the year.
Goldeyes Josh Mazzola, who played his 343rd and 344th consecutive American Association games in the double header, answered back with a single run homer in the bottom of the fourth. Mazzola is now tied with John Allen for the record of most consecutive American Association games ever played. If slotted to play in Friday evening's game, Mazzola will be the new record holder.
In his first start of the season, Goldeyes Gavin Stupienski earned an RBI single that brought Kevin Garcia home. It was the only other run for the Fish that game.
The Saltdogs tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh, when Hinshaw brought Smith and Maggio to home plate.
Goldeyes pitchers Brandon Bingel, Cameron McVey and Jack Charleston relieved starting pitcher Edwin Carl. Both Bingel and McVey worked their way through scoreless innings.
Carl took the loss for the Fish, while Saltdogs starting pitcher Tyler Herron was credited with the win.
The Goldeyes now head on a six game road trip, beginning with a three game series against the Chicago Dogs tomorrow at 7:00pm. Winnipeg's left-hand pitcher Shane Dawson faces Chicago's right-hand pitcher Connor Root. This will be the Goldeyes' first visit to IMPACT Field. The next home stand for the Fish begins Friday, June 8th against the Chicago Dogs.
