Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs shut out St. Paul on Friday, beating the Saints 3-0 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln improves to 24-15 on the second half of the season, and increases its lead over St. Paul in the North Division to four games.

Jarrett Gardner (10-4) pitched another masterpiece against St. Paul, tossing eight shutout innings and allowing just six hits. Gardner struck out five and did not walk a batter, beating the Saints for the fourth time this season without a loss. He had some help in the field, including a diving catch by right fielder Rafael Alvarez in the third inning, and a 3-6-1 double play turned with two on and nobody out in the top of the sixth. Gardner earned his tenth win of the season, becoming the first Saltdogs pitcher in team history to record double-digit victories in three different seasons.

The Lincoln offense, meanwhile, found a way to manufacture runs against St. Paul starter Mitch Wylie (7-7), who had been 2-0 against the Saltdogs this season. Alvarez doubled and took third on an error in the second inning, and scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Shawn McGill. In the fifth, Alvarez singled, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by Gavin Dickey. Shea McFeely followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Brandon Jones hit into an RBI fielder's choice to score the final run of the night. Alvarez finished the night 2-for-3 with

In the ninth inning, Chris Thompson came on to record his 30th save, which ties the league record. He allowed a leadoff double, but an incredible diving catch by Josh Burrus later in the inning helped Thompson to get out of the inning without giving up a run. Chris also struck out two in the frame, and his save ties the record set last season by Kris Regas of Sioux Falls.

The two teams play game two of their three-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Righty Tim Brown is scheduled to make the start for the Saltdogs.

The current Saltdogs homestand runs through August 23. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
