Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (2-4) dug themselves an early hole and were unable to mount a comeback, falling 7-1 to the Salt Lake Bees (4-2) on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium. With the loss, the Rainiers dropped a home series for the first time since last July.
The Bees wasted little time getting on the board. Matt Thaiss got the scoring started, doubling to right center to score Kean Wong (walk). Brendon Davis followed suit with a single to bring in Thaiss, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Rainiers chipped away in the third, as Erick Mejia came around on an error to bring Tacoma within one.
Salt Lake broke the game open with a crooked number in the fourth. With two outs, consecutive hits from Monte Harrison (single), Magneuris Sierra (double) and Michael Stefanic (single) added four to the Bees' tally, giving Salt Lake a five run advantage. The Bees tacked on a run with a Luis Rengifo single in the fifth, bringing the score to 7-1.
Salt Lake starter Kenny Rosenberg delivered 4.0 solid innings, allowing an unearned run, two hits and two walks to go along with five strikeouts. Bees' relievers Elvis Peguero, Zack Weiss and Jose Marte totaled 4.2 scoreless frames with six strikeouts, surrendering two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.
The Tacoma bullpen of Danny Young, Matt Koch, Nick Ramirez, Wyatt Mills and Patrick Weigel combined for 4.2 shutout innings of three-hit ball, striking out eight and walking three.
The Rainiers are off on Monday as they travel to Albuquerque. LHP Ian McKinney will get the nod for Tacoma; ABQ (1-5) will start RHP Frank Duncan in their home opener, at 5:35 PT on Tuesday.
Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto will have full coverage on TacomaRainiers.com. All 2022 Rainiers games, home and away, can also be heard for free on the MiLB First Pitch app. HD video broadcasts of every home game can be viewed with a MiLB.TV subscription.
