Salmon Kings toppled by Aces

Anchorage, AK - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, notched the first goal while in the north for game one of the three game series in Alaska, but the defending champion Aces settled the score in the second and held a 3-2 win.

In the Aces second powerplay of the game, Ryan Wade posted his fourth goal of the game in a shorthanded effort. With 7:07 remaining in the first period, Wade slipped behind the Alaska defense for a breakaway and beat Netminder Derek Gustafson blocker side for the 1-0 Victoria advantage.

Alaska answered in the second period with three straight goals. Steven Later earned his fourth goal of the season, picking up a rebound in front of a yawning cage and caught Goaltender Bryan Bridges sprawling.

At 3:31 into the period, 57 seconds following the previous goal, the Aces grabbed a 2-1 lead. Defenseman Corbin Schmidt notched his fourth goal of the season as Bridges was screened from his left circle shot. With 2:32 remaining in the stanza, assistant captain Joe Talbot tallied his sixth goal of the season and gave the home team a 3-1 cushion.

All-Star selection Milan Gajic closed the gap in the third frame, finishing a breakaway pass from Kiel McLeod and handcuffing Gustafson farside from the left circle.

Alaska kept their 3-2 lead, despite Victoria gaining a 6-on-4 advantage with the goaltender pulled.

Final: 3-2 Aces

Gustafson earned tenth win of the season, and Bridges was dealt his tenth loss. Victoria slipped in a shorthanded goal but neither team earned a score on the powerplay-Victoria was 0 for 5 and Alaska was 0 for 3. The Aces outshot the Salmon Kings 28-23. The deck is reshuffled as Victoria (13-22-0-1) will face Alaska (21-10-1-1) again tomorrow at Sullivan Arena. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. (AKT).
