Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Anchorage, AK - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met in the third game of a four-game set that pits the two teams atop the standings in the National Conference. Victoria started Julien Ellis in net while Alaska countered with Kevin Regan.
The teams both had chances, but both goaltenders were equal to the task during the first 20 minutes. The frame was highlighted by a level of intensity that spilled over into a melee with just over five minutes remaining in the period. After the smoke had cleared the teams finished off the frame without further incident or a goal. The game was scoreless through the first 20 minutes.
The teams traded goals in the second frame. Victoria got on the board first when Matt Kelly charged down the let wing. He fed Curtis Billsten whose shot was stopped by Regan, but Kelly collected the rebound and fired it in the net. The Aces would respond in the closing seconds of the frame. A goalmouth scramble was highlighted by a behind the back cross crease pass by Aces' captain Scott Burt. The Burt pass found Erik Fabian all alone with a gaping net, and the 2nd-year pro made no mistake knotting the game at 1-1. That would be the score through two periods of play.
The Aces pulled ahead by a goal when rookie defenseman Ryan Turek blasted a slap shot from the right face-off dot past a screened Ellis. Moments later the Kings would respond when an Adam Taylor pass found Chris St, Jacques in the slot. St. Jacques lifted a backhander over the glove hand of Regan. That would conclude the scoring in the third period as well as overtime. The teams headed into the shootout.
The only goal of the shootout was scored by the Aces Luke Erickson as he went very wide to the left side wall and cut in on Ellis and snapped a shot wide side. Dan Gendur on Victoria's final shot put a backhander off the post. Aces 3 Salmon Kings 2 in a shootout.
Victoria finished 0/2=0% on the power play, while Alaska finished 0/4=0%. The Salmon Kings out shot the Aces 36-33.
The Salmon Kings and Aces conclude their four-game set tomorrow evening at 6:05 p.m. PST. The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday, March 11th to open a four-game set against the Ontario Reign. For tickets call 220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
