Charlotte Checkers News Release

Gwinnett, GA. - Charlotte goaltender Jeff Jakaitis was brilliant all night stopping 54 of 56 shots against the Gwinnett Gladiators but the effort wasn't enough to propel his team to victory as they fell by a score of 2-1 in overtime.

The only goal of the first period was supplied by Checkers forward Jeff Miles who scored during a breakaway after a turnover on the Checkers blueline by the Gladiators. Miles' shot between the legs of Gwinnett goalie Josh Johnson put Charlotte up 1-0 at 8:23.

The Gladiators tied the contest up during the second period on a wrist shot from forward Dirk Southern at 6:49. Southern skated down the right wing side and beat Checkers goalie Jeff Jakaitis between the legs. This locked the game at 1-1 after forty minutes.

A closely battled third period didn't result in a goal for either team but Gwinnett came away with the game winner when Gladiators defenseman beat Jakaitis on a wrist shot just 58 seconds into the extra session.

The Checkers are playing in their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game will take place Feb. 17 against the Florida Everblades at 4:00pm.
