Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC- The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with 24-year-old Warren McCutcheon.
A native of Carmen, Manitoba, McCutcheon was selected by the New Jersey Devils in round eight (#257 overall) of the 2000 NHL entry draft.
The 6'4", 200-lb Forward was a member of one of the top lines in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) last season-paired with Kevin Saurette and Paul Deniset of the University of Manitoba Bison. McCutcheon led the team last season with 60 points (27 goals, 33 assists) in just 41 games.
In three seasons at Manitoba, McCutcheon tallied 98 points (40 goals, 58 assists) in 104 games. In the last two seasons he earned the university's Mike Ridley Award for superior athletic ability, good academic standing and high level of leadership as a full-time student. He also received the Canada West Player of the Week (Feb. 27) in netting 5 goals and 2 assists in a three-game playoff series win versus the Regina Cougars.
"Warren started with all the tools in Junior, and has grown and matured into a very effective scorer," said Tony MacAulay, Salmon Kings head coach. "He comes from a very strong program, and with his good size I believe he is ready to play pro."
McCutcheon has received an invitation to the Manitoba Moose training camp, which begins on-ice sessions on Monday September 25th.
He began his junior hockey career with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1999. In two seasons with the Hurricanes, he notched 52 points (19 goals, 33 assists) and followed up with a season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with the Canmore Eagles, finishing second in team scoring with 66 points (30 goals, 36 assists) in 48 games. With these numbers, McCutcheon helped solidify Canmore as the South Division champions in 2002-03.
"I am very excited about taking the next step-coming out of the university program and turning pro," said McCutcheon.
Check out the Salmon Kings "Annual Blue and White game" during training camp at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Admission is free to the intra squad matchup which begins at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday October 11th.
