Salmon Kings Lose Battle Of The Fish

Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads clashed in a matchup of the West Division's top two teams. Victoria came into the contest three points up on Idaho with two games in hand.

Idaho was the first to get on the board as Taggart Desmet hit Kory Scoran in the high slot and he fired a shot into the top corner glove side behind Salmon Kings netminder Billy Thompson. That would be the only scoring in the first period as Idaho took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room.

Idaho increased their lead in the second period when John Lammers made a pretty centering pass from behind the net. Lammers, skating forward, made a behind the back pass to Marty Flichel. With Thompson moving with Lammers towards the left post, Flichel made no mistake and fired it in the open right side of the net. The Kings would get a few opportunities in the period, but Idaho goalie Kellen Briggs was equal to the task and the Steelheads led 2-1 after forty minutes.

The Salmon Kings cut it to a one goal lead halfway through the third period on a strong individual effort by Jordan Krestanovich. The Kings' forward brought the puck across the blueline, split the defense and his initial shot was stopped by Briggs, but he popped in the rebound for the power play goal to make it a 2-1 game. Idaho responded and made it 3-1 when Mike Sullivan batted a puck out of the air from in front of the Kings' net and put it past Thompson for the goal. With the goalie pulled, Ash Goldie scored on the power play with 25.3 seconds remaining to make it 3-2, but Victoria would get no closer. Steelheads 3 Salmon Kings 2.

The Salmon Kings went 2/4=50% with the man advantage and the Steelheads went 0/3=0%. Idaho out shot Victoria 32-29.

The Salmon Kings return and Idaho Steelheads play game two of this three-game set on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Game three goes on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
