VICTORIA, BC - Joe Talbot scored his second goal of the night to force overtime and earn Alaska a point in an eventual 4-3 shootout defeat at the hands of Victoria in front of 4,153 Saturday at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
For the second straight night, the Aces (42-8-4) had to rally in the game's final minute of regulation to create extra time, but on this occasion, the Salmon Kings shook off the disappointment of coughing up another late third period lead and prevailed in a shootout.
Alaska grabbed a 1-0 lead after the first period despite being out-shot 12-6, as Alex Leavitt ripped a one-timer from the left circle past Victoria goaltender B.J. Boxma at the 11:41 mark. Jade Galbraith tied the game just 46 seconds into the second period with the Salmon Kings on the power play, only to see the Aces regain the lead at 6:56 on a snap shot by Talbot from the top of the right circle. Seth Leonard flipped home a backhander off the rush with 2:29 left in the period to forge a 2-2 tie heading into the final 20 minutes.
Adam Taylor gave Victoria its first lead with 3:29 remaining in the game by beating Matt Underhill with a wrist shot top shelf on a breakaway, created by a long pass from Lanny Gare. With Underhill having been pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Talbot's 22nd goal of the year came on a wrist shot from the right circle with 43 seconds left, pulling Alaska even at 3-3. But after a scoreless overtime where the Aces took all five shots on goal and failed to convert a power play, only Ryan Ramsay managed to score for Alaska in the shootout, while Galbraith and Ryan Wade solved Underhill to give the Salmon Kings the extra point and their third win over the Aces this season.
Alaska saw its lead in the West Division trimmed to six points over Las Vegas, who rallied to beat Idaho 2-1 on Saturday. The Aces return to action Wednesday at Sullivan Arena in the opener of a three-game series against Utah, beginning at 7:15 p.m. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com, where all home games and selected road contests also are available on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks.
