Shiryaev Acquired From Bako; Weiman Back From Lowell

February 26, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The San Diego Gulls, two days after acquiring Chris Cava from Columbia, announced another deal Sunday. Veteran forward Dennis Shiryaev was picked up from the Bakersfield Condors in exchange for future considerations. Goaltender Tyler Weiman was also re-assigned by the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters Sunday.

Veterans Taj Melson and Chad Wagner, who filled in for three games this week, were both released Sunday. Melson, ranked third all-time among Gulls defensemen, had three points (1g, 2a) and was a +6 in his three games. Wagner, San Diego's all-time penalty-minute leader, saw limited action on the ice, but was definitely an intimidation factor being in the lineup.

The 27-year-old Shiryaev recorded five points (3g, 2a) and 105 penalty minutes in 24 games for Bakersfield this season. In 55 games for Bakersfield last season, he notched a career high 28 points (12g, 16a) and was the Condors leader with 138 penalty minutes.

Shiryaev has six complete professional seasons under his belt, four of which have come in the ECHL. The 6-foot-1-inch, 215-pound native of Kharkov, Ukraine has also played two full seasons in the Western Professional Hockey League (1999-00 and 2000-01). During his pro career he has averaged about 190 penalty minutes a season, including a career high 282 in 2001-02.

Weiman, during his second stint with Lowell this season, appeared in five games and posted a 2-2-0 record, with a 3.06 goals-against average and .891 save percentage. The 21-year-old goaltender made his AHL debut with the Lock Monsters on Dec. 28 and recorded a 4-2 win after stopping 26 shots. He's appeared in 24 games for the Gulls this season, going 9-10-3 with a 3.02 GAA and .903 save percentage.

Meanwhile, R.J. Enga is expected to make his return to the San Diego lineup Sunday in Stockton. The veteran winger has appeared in one game for the Gulls this season (Feb. 14 in Las Vegas) after last playing professionally in 2002-03 with the Blue and Orange.

The Gulls are back on the road Sunday in Stockton, with game-time scheduled for 4 p.m. San Diego will also play the Thunder on Tuesday before opening a four-game homestand Wednesday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. All games can be heard on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. Most games can also be viewed on the Gulls' web site, courtesy of B2 Networks.
