Salmon Kings with the Ace shot

Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Aces and S-Kings dealt another round at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in front of a crowd of 4153. Victoria had the winning hand and split the two game series with the league leaders in a 4-3 shoot out win.

Both teams were cautious in the first nine minutes of the game, and jockeyed for position in the neutral zone, until the fifth and sixth penalties of the first led to an Alaska lead. A power play goal at 11:41 from Friday night's Overtime scorer Alex Leavitt put the Salmon Kings in the hole 1-0.

Period number two started with a bang. Just 46 seconds into the second, Steve Lingren set up Nate Forster at the blue line, whose slap shot snuck under Matt Underhill and spun in the crease. Jade Galbraith poked in the spinning puck in the crease for his sixth power play goal of the season.

Six minutes later, the Aces took the lead again as Joe Talbot was left alone in the slot and finished with a top left corner shot and earned his 21st goal of the season. But with 2:29 left in the frame, Seth Leonard brought it over the blue line, dodged left to right and waited for a screen from his teammates, before backhanding in a goal to tie it up 2-2.

Victoria took their first lead of the game in the third as Adam Taylor pulled in a pass from Lanny Gare to send him on a breakaway. Taylor aced it over Underhill's blocker side to make it 3-2 for the Salmon Kings with 3:29 left in the game.

Alaska quieted the crowd with 43 seconds left in regulation as Talbot tallied his second goal of the night. The Aces carried the puck out of their end with a 6-to-5 man advantage and swarmed the Victoria crease. Talbot rippled the mesh from the right of the crease and sent the game into the tenth Overtime game at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Alaska out shot Victoria 5-0 in the Overtime period but neither team hit paydirt.

The Salmon Kings won the game in the team's third shoot out since January 27. Galbraith snapped it top corner to score as the second shooter in the Salmon King lineup. Ryan Ramsay beat BJ Boxma to tie the shootout, but Captain Ryan Wade took out the wild card and scored as the fourth shooter. Boxma stopped the Aces final shooter, Mike Scott, and sealed Victoria's 18th victory.

Victoria was 1-8 on the power play and Alaska capitalized on one of five opportunities with the man advantage. Boxma earned his fourth win and Underhill suffered the shoot out loss. Alaska and Victoria were even 33-33 in shots overall.

The Salmon Kings face the 24-19-5 Bakersfield Condors in a three game series starting next Friday March 3rd.
