Salmon Kings Defenseman shine in Nevada's bright lights
January 10, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Las Vegas, NV - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, nestled into the Nevada desert for the fourth game of the season versus the Wranglers. Rookie Defenseman Seamus Young and Matt Kelly each grabbed a goal, and Forward Darryl Lloyd notched three assists in Salmon Kings 3-1 victory.
The Wranglers scored at 4:57 into the first period and took the 1-0 lead. Joe Tallari tallied his second goal of the season, finding a loose puck in front of the crease and poking it past rookie Goaltender Bryan Bridges.
The Salmon Kings matched the score during a 4-on-4 series with 5:19 left in the stanza. From the Las Vegas right circle, Kiel McLeod nabbed his own faceoff win and stepped to the net with a backhand shot past Netminder Kevin Nastiuk for his 16th goal of the season. Victoria outshot Las Vegas 10-5 in the first.
Victoria raised the bet in the second period and scored the only goal for the 2-1 advantage. While buzzing in the Wranglers zone, Wes Goldie carried the puck towards the blueline and dished to rookie Defenseman Seamus Young, who snapped the shot from the slot to the bottom right corner and earned his sixth goal of the season.
The other half of the rookie defenseman pairing on the Salmon Kings active roster, Matt Kelly, added the insurance goal with 4:10 remaining in the game. Skating along the right boards, Kelly's slapshot trickled underneath Nastiuk for his fourth goal in seven games, and the Victoria 3-1 lead.
Final: 3-1 Salmon Kings
Bryan Bridges earned a 0.944 save percentage and his third win of the season, and Nastiuk folded with his fifth loss. Neither team earned a tally on the powerplay-Victoria was 0 for 7 and Las Vegas was 0 for 4. The Salmon Kings outshot the Wranglers 30-18. Victoria (13-21-0-1) catch a breath before making the trip north to Alaska (20-10-1-1) for a three-game series on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Sullivan Arena. Victoria won the last three-game series versus the Aces to kick off 2007.
