Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
Salem-Keizer ambushed the Everett AquaSox with eight runs on 14 hits Thursday night as the Volcanoes defeated Everett 8-2 at Volcanoes Stadium.
Eight different Volcanoes reached base and five scored at least one run in Salem-Keizer's second consecutive win over Everett.
The Volcanoes scored a single run in each of the contest's first four innings to take an early 4-0 lead. Ronnie Jebavy began the barrage, belting a solo home run in the first inning. John Riley added another solo shot in the second - his second home run in as many days - to push Salem-Keizer out in front, 2-0.
Salem-Keizer continued to put pressure on Everett starter Luiz Gohara (2-4, 4.76 ERA) in the third, loading the bases with two outs. Gohara then skipped a wild pitch by his catcher, allowing C.J. Hinojosa to score and extend the Volcanoes lead to 3-0. Riley struck out to end the frame, but Julio Pena promptly made up for it with a solo homer in the fourth. In total, the Volcanoes tallied four runs on nine hits through the first four innings of play.
The AquaSox responded with a pair of runs in the fifth. Reliever Armando Paniagua came in and immediately ran into trouble, allowing both Ryan Uhl and Conner Hale to reach without recording an out. Paniagua retired the next two batters he faced but failed to put away Shawn O'Malley, who drove in both runners with a single into right.
Everett looked poised to at least tie the game to begin the sixth, placing runners at first and second with nobody out, but reliever Nate Santiago (1-1, 3.70 ERA) retired the next three batters he faced to escape the jam. The Volcanoes took advantage of Everett's shortcomings the next half inning, sending nine men to the plate and scoring four runs. Jebavy, Miguel Gomez, Scott Price and Pena all collected RBI singles in the frame as Salem-Keizer pushed its lead to 8-2.
Relievers Eric Sim and Ryan Halstead held the AquaSox scoreless throughout the remainder of the game as the Volcanoes secured the victory. Santiago picked up the win for Salem-Keizer.
Player of the Game: Ronnie Jebavy had a terrific night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Up Next: The Volcanoes continue their series with the Everett AquaSox on Friday night. Mac Marshall (0-0, 4.76 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. Darin Gillies (1-1, 3.16 ERA) will start for Everett. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
