Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Akron Aeros pitching combined to strike out 17 Curve batters on Thursday afternoon in a, 4-1, win in front of a season-best crowd of 4,662 at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The 17 strikeouts are the most by a Curve team in franchise history for a nine-inning game, surpassing the previous total of 16, which occurred on August 13, 2008.
Akron's Danny Salazar (2-3) worked up and down the Curve lineup on Thursday afternoon, punching out a career-best 12 batters in six innings while giving up just one hit. That one hit came from Curve DH Adalberto Santos, who reached on an infield single in the fifth inning to break up Salazar's run of 12-up, 12-down to start the game.
Lost in the shuffle was a quality start turned in by Curve RHP Jameson Taillon (2-3), who rebounded from a tough first inning to pitch six strong frames overall. Taillon permitted two runs on four hits in the first inning but then zoned in to allow one unearned run on three hits over his final five. He ended his day with six strikeouts and just one walk to go along with his third quality start of the season.
Altoona's only run of the day came in the seventh inning when it was once again Santos finding himself a hit. This time, Santos sliced a double inside the bag at first and down the right-field line with one away. After Alex Dickerson struck out, Jarek Cunningham hit a ground ball that got by Aeros third baseman Kyle Bellows and into left field enabling Santos to score and cut the deficit to two.
Santos had two of Altoona's three hits on Thursday and in doing so extended his on-base streak to 12 games. Kelson Brown added the other remaining hit for the Curve in the ballgame.
Jeff Inman worked two scoreless innings in relief of Taillon and has now not permitted a run in his last six games dating back to April 8.
After a 2-5 homestand, the Curve (11-16) now embark on a six-game road trip beginning at 7:05 p.m. Friday night at Jerry Uht Park in Erie. RHP Ethan Hollingsworth (0-1, 4.50) takes to the mound for the Curve on Friday in his first start of the season. Hollingsworth spent a majority of his MiLB career as a starter before starting and relieving in 2012. He'll be opposed by SeaWolves RHP Patrick Cooper (0-2, 5.85) in the first of three over the weekend. Both of Cooper's losses in 2013 have come at the hands of the Curve.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. For tickets and more information on upcoming promotions and games at Peoples Natural Gas Field, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the ticket windows at the ballpark.
