Salas Wins It in Extras in Double-A Debut

San Antonio Missions News Release


SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions began a six-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Tuesday night. With five new players on the roster, including 17-year-old Ethan Salas, the Missions offense was filled with youth from top to bottom. After trailing 5-0, the club stormed back and forced extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Salas won the game with a double to right field. San Antonio won 8-7 in 10 innings.

Gabe Mosser was the starting pitcher for the Missions. After a scoreless first inning, Amarillo plated two runs on two hits in the second inning. With one man down, Seth Beer singled and Deyvison De Los Santos grounded into a fielder's choice. Neyfy Castillo doubled and De Los Santos advanced to third base. J.J. D'Orazio reached base on a throwing error from Marcos Castanon. On the play, De Los Santos came in to score. A wild pitch from Mosser allowed Castillo to score. The Sod Poodles took a 2-0 lead.

Amarillo added to their lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Beer drew a one-out walk off Mosser. De Los Santos, on the first pitch of his at-bat, left the yard for a two-run home run. Mosser retired the next batter before surrendering back-to-back base hits to D'Orazio and Camden Duzenack. A wild pitch from Mosser allowed D'Orazio to score. Amarillo improved their lead to 5-0.

Yu-Min Lin was the starting pitcher for the Sod Poodles. The southpaw did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. That inning, San Antonio plated two runs on three hits. Jakob Marsee began the frame with a base hit. With one man down, Marcos Castanon doubled and Marsee advanced to third base. Lin struck out the next batter before allowing a two-RBI single to Nathan Martorella. The Missions trailed 5-2.

The Sod Poodles added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning. Mosser struck out the first batter before issuing a walk to A.J. Vukovich. Michel Baez took over on the mound and Vukovich was thrown out trying to steal second base. Ivan Melendez drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Beer drove him in with a single to right-center field. Amarillo improved their lead to 6-2.

The Missions cut into the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jackson Merrill and Castanon hit back-to-back base hits to start the frame. Graham Pauley drove in Merrill with a single to center field. Castanon came in to score as Martorella grounded into a double play. Conor Grammes entered the game to replace Lin. The right-hander issued a walk to Reyes. Reyes then stole second and third base. He scored on a wild pitch. The Missions cut the lead to 6-5.

The Missions completed the comeback and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Korry Howell began the frame by reaching base on a dropped third strike. He stole second base before being thrown out trying to steal third base. Marsee drew a walk and stole second base. With two outs in the frame, Castanon tied the game with a double to left field.

San Antonio loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning. Facing Christian Montes De Oca, Martorella singled and Ripken Reyes was hit by a pitch. After retiring the next two batters, Howell drew a walk. Marsee could not cash in as he flew out to left field.

In the top of the ninth inning, Lake Bachar was on the mound and Melendez was the placed runner at second base. After retiring the first two batters, Castillo drove in Melendez with a single to center field. Amarillo gained a late 7-6 lead.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Mitchell Stumpo took the mound and Pauley was the placed runner at second base. Martorella tied the game with a single to center field. Hollis, pinch-running for Martorella, stole second base with one out in the frame. Ethan Salas ended the game with a double to right field for his first Double-A hit.
