Fargo, NDâ Kazuhiro Kohno's two-run double in the top of the 12th inning gave the St. Paul Saints a 5-4 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo. With the victory, St. Paul improved to 14-9 on the season. The loss dropped Fargo-Moorhead to 16-9 overall.
St. Paul started the scoring in the top of the second, getting an RBI fielder's choice from Dan Dennison to take a 1-0 lead. The RedHawks took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. After a pair of infield singles by Brad Mazer and Derek Dormanen put runners on first and second, Joe Mathis blooped a double to left field that scored Mazer. The RedHawks went up 2-1 on Steve Foley's sacrifice fly that scored Dormanen.
St. Paul went ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning, getting an RBI double from Scott Samuels and an RBI single from Tonayne Brown. The RedHawks tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, as Dormanen's sacrifice fly scored Brian Ward.
After Kohno's second double of the game put the Saints up 5-3 in the top of the 12th inning, Joe Mathis cut the lead to 5-4 with an RBI double that scored Ward in the bottom of the frame.
St. Paul pitcher Eddie Aucoin (3-0) picked up the victory. He pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out one. Mel Spivey (0-5) took the loss for the RedHawks. He pitched 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Spivey struck out one batter and walked two.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and St. Paul Saints will continued their three-game series on Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field. The Saints will counter with RHP Jason Verdugo (0-0).
