Jackhammers Launch Fifth Win Of Trip

Lincoln, NE- The Joliet JackHammers (13-11) defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs (14-9) 3-to-1 in front of 3,578 on Monday night at Haymarket Park. This was the first game of a four-game series. The jackhammers are 4-and-1 through five games of this eight-game road trip. The JackHammers have also won eight of their last nine games.

Josh Loggins (1-for-4), who entered this game ranked 2nd in the Northern League in home runs, led off the top of the 4th inning with his 7th home run and 24th RBI of the season. The JackHammers led 1-to-0.

JackHammers starting RHP Nathan Kent (2-2) was perfect through three innings. In one of the more intense moments of the game, there were two outs and two runners aboard in the bottom of the 7th inning when Kent struck out Kevin Sullivan to preserve the JackHammers 1-to-0 lead.

Ben Fritz (1-for-4) led off the top of the 8th inning with the first hit of his pro career, a home run to right field. That gave the JackHammers a 2-to-0 lead. A walk to Dan Firlit (0-for-2), and that meant the end of the night for Saltdogs starting RHP Darren Truty (1-3) who worked seven-plus innings, allowed five hits, two runs (both earned), walked one and struck out six. Truty took the loss.

Corey Paul (2-for-4) led off the top of the 9th inning with his 5th home run and 19th RBI of the season. The JackHammers led 3-to-0. The JackHammers three home runs on Monday night led off innings. They began the game leading the Northern League with 27 home runs, and the JackHammers now have 30. They had 45 all of last season.

Kent pitched eight scoreless innings for the win. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out seven.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, Jorge Moreno (1-for-3) led off with a single to center field and later advanced on a passed ball. With two outs in the inning, Josh Patton (1-for-3) grounded a RBI single to left field to end the shutout bid. JackHammers relief RHP Rob Garvin pitched the bottom of the 9th inning for his first save since May 20, Opening Night. This was just his second save opportunity of the season.

LOOSE GRAVEL: Catcher Ben Fen Fritz made the first start of his pro career. Behind the plate, Fritz caught JuJu Foreman trying to steal 2nd base in the bottom of the 4th inning. It was a perfect throw from his knees. Foreman entered the game ranked 4th in the Northern League with eight stolen bases.

The JackHammers and Saltdogs play the second game of this four-game series at 7:05 pm on Thursday night at Haymarket Park. LHP Jodie Kennedy (2-1, 6.75) will start for the JackHammers, and RHP Hideki Nagasaka (1-2, 4.71) will start for the Saltdogs. This game will be heard live on 1340-AM WJOL and on the team's website of www.jackhammerbaseball.com. Bryan Dolgin will begin the pre-game show at 6:45 pm and have the play-by-play thereafter.

The JackHammers return home on Friday, June 18 to play the St. Paul Saints in a four-game series. The first 1,000 fans ages 21 and older will receive hospital scrubs courtesy of Silver Cross Hospital. Before the game, the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame will introduce the Class of 2004. It's an All-American Friday, and that means the JackHammers will wear red, white and blue uniforms, and a fireworks display will follow the game.
