St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (June 30, 2010) - Things appear to be coming together for the St. Paul Saints as they won their second consecutive series for the first time this season as they defeated the Pensacola Pelicans 3-2 on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,247.

The Saints kept one of the league's best hitting teams tied up all night long thanks in part to three double plays. In the second with runners at first and second Saints starter Jake Schmidt got Antoin Gray to ground into a double play. In the third with one on and one out Schmidt got John Alonso to ground into a double play. In the eighth Joe D'Alessandro did the dirty work getting Adolfo Gonzalez to hit into a double play with one on and one out.

The Saints trailed after the top of the first 1-0 when Francisco Leandro walked, moved to second on a single by Alonso and scored on a double from Chase Porch.

The Saints wasted little time tying the game up. In the bottom of the first Josh Alley led off with a single and with two outs Jason Cooper doubled him home. Cooper finished the night 2-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

In the third the Saints took the lead for good. Brandon Carter led off with a single to right and with two outs Ole Sheldon homered to left, his 12th of the season and first since a walk-off homer on June 14, to give the Saints a 3-1 lead.

Saints starter Schmidt was solid going 5.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while walking five and striking out one. The bullpen did the rest as Joe D'Alessandro went 2.1 shutout innings giving up one hit while striking out two and Matt Meyer earned his first save going 1.0 shutout inning while walking one and striking out one.

The Saints head to Lawrence-Dumont Stadium for a three game series beginning Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Ryan Morse (2-2, 3.86) to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Sean Teague (1-1, 1.13). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
