St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (July 21, 2007) - The St. Paul Saints looked like they were going to cruise to their seventh straight victory after putting up four in the first, but they were silenced for 11 innings after that losing 5-4 to the Sioux City Explorers in 12 innings on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 7,082.
The Saints had a great opportunity to win the game in the 10th. With one out Scooter Jordan walked and Ben Thomas followed with a single to put runners at first and second. With two outs Marcel Longmire hit a grounder to short, but Nick McCoola's throw to second wasn't in time to get Adam Bourassa, loading the bases. Brian Sprout, however, struck out to end the inning.
In the 12th Jason Tuttle led off with an infield single for the Explorers. A passed ball moved Tuttle to second and he took third on a single to right by McCoola. Tony Pierce then unleashed a wild pitch that scored Tuttle, which proved to be the winning run.
The Saints had an opportunity in the bottom of the inning when Jordan led off with a walk. He walked three times in the game extending his streak of reaching base safely to 45 consecutive games. He was sacrificed to second by Thomas. With one out Bourassa and Longmire grounded out to end the game.
The Saints took a 4-0 lead after the first when Thomas singled to center. Bourassa followed with an RBI double to make it 1-0. After a walk to Longmire, two batters later Adam Olow hit his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to left.
The Explorers scored a run in the second on a solo homer from Alex Llanos, his third of the season.
The Explorers scored three in the third when the Saints defense fell apart. Pete Pirman led off by reaching on an error from Alex Fonseca. Shea Harris laid down a sacrifice bunt, but pitcher Brian Whinnery's thrown to first was in the dirt allowing Harris to reach. Two batters later McCoola added an RBI double, followed by a sac fly from Jake Daubert and an RBI single from Jorge Moreno which tied it at four.
The Saints managed just four hits after the first inning and had their six game winning streak snapped. The Saints bullpen went 6.0 innings allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven.
The Saints have Sunday off and head to Haymarket Park on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Saints send LHP Jake Postlewait (6-6, 3.51). The game can be heard on KBGY 107.5 FM.
