Aviators Score a Few Runs but Fall 12-7

July 21, 2007 - American Association (AA)
Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

The Aviators finally broke out of their scoring slump. Unfortunately their pitching couldn't contain El Paso's high powered offense and they dropped another one to the Diablos 12-7. It was the eighth straight loss for Coastal Bend.

Andy Torres started for the Diablos and earned his sixth win of the year to improve to 6-1. T.J. Hendricks started for Coastal Bend but pitched just 3.1 innings allowing 3 earned runs before being pulled for Tim Haines. Hendricks took the loss to fall to 3-7 on the season. The Aviators used a total of five pitchers in the game.

Offensively, each team had several players with multiple hits which led to a back and forth contest. Aviators Matt Spencer, Jason Arrowood, and Bryon Smith each had strong games. Smith led the Aviators with a 4 for 5 effort and smacked his seventh homerun of the year in the sixth to draw the Aviators within a run at 5-4.

But El Paso answered back with 5 runs in their half of the inning to make it a 10-4 game. With two out and runners at second and third, the Aviators intentionally walked Kory Drew to load the bases. Jonathan Hunton came in from the Coastal Bend bullpen to face DH Jorge Alvarez. The All-Star game MVP single up the middle to drive in two for a 7-4 lead. Alvarez then stole second and catcher Jason Arrowood's through went into centerfield. That allowed Drew to score and Alvarez to reach third increasing the advantage to 8-4. Hunton's rough outing continued as Juan Camacho then hit a double over left fielder Travis Tully's head to make it 9-4 before Walter Olmstead doubled over right fielder Matt Spencer's head to push the lead to 10-4.

The teams play game three of a four game set tomorrow night at 8:05pm. Kevin Hull (5-4, 5.45 ERA) will take the mound for the Aviators. The game can be heard locally on KOPY FM 92.1 but will not be available online.
