St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints couldn't figure out Indianapolis Indians starter Chase De Jong for 7.0 innings. Their luck wasn't any better against two relievers and for the first time in franchise history they were no-hit in a nine inning game as the Saints lost to the Indians 5-0 in front of 3,115 at CHS Field.

De Jong retired the first seven hitters he faced before walking Jermaine Palacios with one out in the third. He ended the inning on a strike out, throw out double play.

In the fourth, the Saints nearly got a hit when Jose Miranda sent a ground ball up the middle that ticked off the glove of De Jong and ricocheted to the second baseman, Rodolfo Castro. He fielded the ball and threw out Miranda. With two outs, De Jong walked Jake Cave, but ended the inning by striking out Kyle Garlick.

De Jong retired the final nine batters he faced before departing going 7.0 no hit innings while walking two and striking out nine. He threw 80 pitches, 49 for strikes.

In the eighth, Austin Brice came on in relief and got Mark Contreras to ground out to short and fanned Daniel Robertson. The play of the game came with two outs in the eighth when Derek Fisher hit a sinking liner to right that Cal Mitchell made a headfirst diving grab on to end the inning.

Yerry De Los Santos came on in the ninth and Palacios line a shot to left-center, but Canna Smith-Njigba tracked it down for the first out. De Los Santos struck out José Godoy and Miranda to end the game and complete the no-hitter.

It's the first nine no-hitter against the Saints since becoming a Triple-A affiliate. They were no-hit in the first game of a doubleheader on July 11, 2021 at Iowa. It was also the first no-hitter in CHS Field history.

Saints starter Cole Sands was masterful for his 5.0 innings of work. He gave up his first hit with one out in the third. The lone mistake he made came in the fourth on a solo homer to right by Castro, his first of the season, making it 1-0. Sands went 5.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out five.

The Indians got four in the eighth, an inning that was aided by just the second error of the season from the Saints. Ji-Hwan Bae led off by reaching on a throwing error from second baseman Daniel Robertson. Bae stole second and moved to third on a groundout. With the infield in, Oneil Cruz hit a grounder to the shortstop Royce Lewis. He threw home and catcher José Godoy swiped the tag as Bae slid past him. The umpire didn't make a call because Bae missed home and the umpire felt Godoy missed the tag. Bae got up and went back and touched home to make it 2-0. Castro followed with a walk and Mason Martin doubled home a run to make it 3-0. With two outs Mitchell doubled home two to make it 5-0.

The same two teams meet in game three of the six-game series on Thursday night at 6:37 p.m. at CHS Field. The Saints send RHP Mario Sanchez (0-0, 0.00) to the mound and the Indians are TBA. The game can be seen on the Saints Broadcast Network, cable access channels in and around the Twins Cities area, and MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
