Saints Glad to Head Home After Losing 10-6 to Jackals

LITTLE FALLS, NJ (June 7, 2012) - A total of 11 days and 10 games on the road came to a screeching halt for the St. Paul Saints who dropped the final three games of the trip as the New Jersey Jackals defeated them 10-6 on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State.

For the second consecutive game the Jackals used a big inning to pull away from the Saints. With the Saints up 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth the Jackals exploded for five runs. Steve Caseres led off with a single, moved to third on a double and the two scored on Angel Berroa's single to give the Jackals a 4-3 lead. Saints starter Danny Gutierrez left the game for reliever Bret Severtson who didn't fair much better. He gave up a double to Bryan Sabatella and then a three-run homer to Francisco Caraballo, his first of the night and seventh of the season, to give the Jackals a 7-3 lead.

The Jackals put the game away for good in the sixth when Chris Henderson led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly by Berroa to make it 8-3. Sabatella and Caraballo hit back-to-back homers to push the Saints deficit to 10-3.

The Saints attempted to come back when they got a run back in the seventh as Adam Frost singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Jim Rapoport's RBI single to make it 10-4.

The Saints nearly sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth. Ronnie Bourquin led off with a walk and with one out and Bourquin at second, Frost hit a grounder to third that was booted by Nick Giarraputo allowing Bourquin to score and making it 10-5. Rapoport singled Frost to third and with two outs Willie Cabrera knocked home Frost. Ole Sheldon, however, with the tying run in the on deck circle, lined out to third to end the game.

Jose Hernandez extended his hitting streak to a career high 15 games when he hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth that temporarily gave the Saints a 3-2 lead.

Unfortunately, for the Saints they struck out a season high 13 times and gave up a season high 10 runs on 15 hits as they finished the roadtrip 4-6.

The Saints return home on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. to take on the Sioux Falls Pheasants. The Saints send RHP Alberto Rolon (1-1, 9.35) and the Pheasants send RHP Alan DeRatt (0-0, 2.46). It is Take Me to Regions Night presented by Regions Hospital with post game fireworks presented by Xcel Energy. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and inside the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
