Drage's Quality Start Boosts RailCats

GARY, Ind. - Derek Drage held Newark to three runs in 6 1/3 innings to lead the RailCats to a 7-4 victory over the Newark Bears on Thursday night. Mike Coles and Mike Rohde each drove in two runs for the RailCats.

The Bears' Juan Martinez hit a one-out single in the first off of Drage. He moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a flyout. Then he scored on another wild pitch by Drage to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The RailCats tied the game in the second inning on an RBI infield single by David Cooper. He has 10 RBI in 10 starts for the RailCats this season. Mike Rohde hit a two-out RBI single in the third to score Mike Coles and put the RailCats on top 2-1. Two Newark errors led to a run for the 'Cats in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-1.

Juan Martinez hit a two-out solo shot off Drage in the 5th to bring the Bears to within 3-2. Mike Massaro smacked a two-out RBI single to center in the sixth and Coles followed with a double that scored Massaro to make it 5-2.

The Bears came back with a pair of runs in the 7th. Juan Martinez continued his tear, hitting a two-run double to the warning track in left to bring the Bears within one run, 5-4. Martinez finished 4-5 with a home run and three RBI. Newark threatened again in the eight, getting runners on the corners, but reliever Chris Allen came on and struck out Matt Tomczyk to end the inning and keep the Bears off the scoreboard. Allen came back on to pitch a perfect ninth for his first save.

Drage gave up three runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out a season-high four batters. It was the first quality start by RailCats starting pitching all season.

Andrew Johnston (0-2) will start for the RailCats on Friday in the second game of a four-game series. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.
