St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA (June 21, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints just haven't come up with the big hits at the right time and on Monday night they failed to cash in late with the bases loaded and dropped their season high fourth straight losing to the Sioux City Explorers 4-3 at Lewis and Clark Park.

With the Saints trailing 4-2 in the eighth they loaded the bases with one out. Brent Krause singled to center and with one out Jason Cooper and Flint Wipke walked. Gerard Haran was then hit by a pitch which forced in a run to make it 4-3, but Josh Alley grounded into an inning ending double play.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Coby Smith doubled high off the left field wall. With two outs Cooper drilled a two-run homer over the right-center field wall, his third of the season. Cooper finished the night 2-3 with the homer, two RBI and a run scored.

The Explorers made it 2-1 in the third without the aid of a hit. Derek Schermerhorn led off with a walk and moved to second when first baseman Ole Sheldon dropped a pickoff attempt. With one out Derrick Hale was hit by a pitch. The two runners moved up on a balk and a ground out by TJ Bohn scored Schermerhorn.

The Explorers scored three in the fourth to take the lead for good. With one out Jon Owings doubled to left and Brett Mieras followed with a walk. With two outs Schermerhorn singled home Owings tying the game at two. Dustin Jones then roped a double to left scoring two runs and making it 4-2.

The same two teams meet in game two of a four game series on Tuesday night at Lewis and Clark Park. The Saints send RHP Todd Mathison (2-0, 5.02) to the mound against Explorers RHP Jae Jung (3-3, 3.07). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
