Diablos Come Up One Run Short

In a game that went back and forth all night, the Lincoln Saltdogs stood on top at the end of the night as they pulled out a 10-8 win over El Paso on Sunday night at Cohen stadium. The game's tying run was thrown out at the plate as the give the Saltdogs win the series. The Diablos go just 2-4 on the home stand.

The Saltdogs grabbed the lead in the first inning on a two run home run by Phil Hawke. The Diablos immediately responded to tie the game with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Bryon Smith had a RBI single and Kyle Nichols added a RBI ground out. The Saltdogs took the lead again in the second inning when Shawn McGill hit a two run home run of his own. El Paso responded with one run in the bottom of the same inning when a Jeff Vincent sacrifice fly brought in a run. The Diablos took their only lead of the night in the third inning when they scored two runs being aided by two errors in the inning. Nichols and Rico Santana both had RBI hits in the inning. Lincoln tied up the game in the sixth inning on a Brandon Jones RBI single and then took the lead back in the seventh inning when two El Paso errors opened the door for three runs to score. Once again the Diablos were able to respond as they scored three runs of their own to tie the game at eight. Smith and Nichols both had RBI hits in the inning while one other run came in on an error.

The Saltdogs would take the lead in the ninth inning by scoring two runs with two outs. El Paso would put up one last fight. They would push across one run on a Rico Santana RBI single and then load up the bases with one out. Jonathan Reynoso put a fly ball into shallow center field and Lincoln's Gavin Dickey made the catch and threw to the plate to throw out Mike Provencher.

The Diablos managed 13 hits in the game and were led by Rico Santana who went 3-4 with two RBI and a triple. Kyle Nichols went 2-4 with three RBI, while Bryon Smith also drove in two runs on three hits. Arnoldo Ponce also pitched in with two hits.

Lincoln had another big night at the plate as they had 14 hits off the Diablos pitching staff. Lonnie Patterson started and went the first five innings for El Paso giving up four runs on seven hits. Patrick Lawler (0-1) pitched two innings, but gave up three hits and the two winning runs to take the loss.

El Paso hits the road for a long nine game, ten day road trip. They start their trip in Grand Prairie on Monday night. The Diablos send D.J. Mattox (3-4, 5.49) to the mound. First pitch is slated for 6:05. The game can be heard on ESPN 1380 or online at www.diablos.com.
