Sacramento's late run dooms Fresno in series opener

The Sacramento River Cats (41-54) held on to beat the Fresno Grizzlies (54-40) 4-3 Monday night from Chukchansi Park. For only the third time in 25 games since 2017, the Grizzlies dropped a start made by Rogelio Armenteros. He picked up a no-decision after six frames. He allowed three runs (earned), on nine hits while striking out six. In 80 innings pitched, he has fanned 84.

Sacramento clawed out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mac Williamson (2-for-4) stroked a sacrifice fly to center, plating Peter Bourjos (2-for-5). Ryder Jones (2-for-5) extended the advantage to 3-0 in the top of the third when he raked a two-run double to the right-center gap.

Fresno knotted the game at three in the bottom of the fourth. J.D. Davis poked a double down the left field line, adding a pair. Then, Davis raced home on a single to left field by Antonio Nunez (3-for-4). That would end the evening for River Cats starter Jordan Johnson (no-decision). He was charged with three runs (earned), on five hits, four walks and five punchouts in four innings of work.

Gregor Blanco (2-for-5) yanked a two-out double to left field, giving Sacramento a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth. A one-run advantage was enough for Pierce Johnson to notch his second save of the season.

Tyler Beede (4-8) earned the win after whiffing three in two frames. Reymin Guduan (3-3) suffered the loss after scattering a run on four hits.

Jamie Ritchie (2-for-4) collected his first multi-hit game in Triple-A, Nunez added his second three-hit affair of the year and Jack Mayfield expanded his team-high hit streak to eight games.

The Grizzlies fell to 3-7 versus the River Cats on the season, while going to 17-7 in the first game of a series and 11-17 in one-run games.

Both teams continue the set with game two of four Tuesday night from Chukchansi Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT. Fresno RHP Josh James (2-4, 3.40) and Sacramento LHP Daniel Camerena (0-4, 3.69) are the probable matchup.
